How to Get Your Kids Involved with Energy Conservation

It’s never too early to teach your kids how to conserve energy. When they learn energy conservation habits early and practice them often, they will carry those habits into adulthood. Here are a few ways to teach your kids about saving energy in your Chapin, SC, home.

Have Them Help with Basic HVAC Maintenance

Kids like to help with little chores around the house. Get them involved with changing the air filters, cleaning the vents and registers, and clearing debris away from the outside unit. Explain why regular preventive maintenance is essential in saving money on your utility bills and how it conserves energy.

Talk About Thermostat Settings

Kids need to understand how a thermostat works and why you have the temperature set to where it is. Explain to them that if the setting is just a few degrees higher in the summer and a few degrees lower in the winter, you can be comfortable, while also reducing energy usage. If you have a programmable thermostat, explain the benefits of having one.

Create a Contest with Rewards

Create a weekly contest where the entire family is involved. Prepare different games or tasks that are related to energy conservation. For every task completed, the person gets a point. At the end of the contest, whoever has the most points gets a reward. Include in the contest games such as “I Spy” where you have to find energy gobblers, like leaving charging devices plugged in even when not in use or lights left on when not necessary. Get creative and have fun so that the kids want to learn more and participate in conserving energy.
